You may be familiar with a concept called the “battle of the bands” but have you heard about the battle of the beds? In the world of home décor and bedding there’s been a shift and people are taking sides, debating the merits of comforters and bedspreads in the quest to make the perfect bed. Okay, that’s a bit of hyperbole but the truth is that tastes and styles are constantly changing and there is an “old school” bedroom décor look as well as a more modern look.

Traditionally the bed was made using a dust ruffle under the box spring, a fitted sheet on the mattress followed by a top sheet, a blanket and then a bedspread. The standard pillows were placed atop the folded bedspread which was then pulled over the pillows and tucked in; the mark of a well made bed was no wrinkles and pillows tucked discreetly out of sight. Perhaps on a child’s bed one might find a toss pillow or stuffed animal placed on top of the bedspread and occasionally one might find a blanket folded at the foot of the bed. This look is popular to this day but to many appears dated and out of style.
Modern bedding begins with a bed skirt to hide the box spring and bed supports; the mattress bears a fitted and flat sheet which is then covered with a comforter or quilt. The pillows are then placed on top of the made bed; this includes the standard sleeping pillows along with decorative pillows in shams. The more pillows the merrier – it’s not unusual to see six or more pillows at the head of a full or queen size bed and some of the pillows are square or even round.
